A visiting family's lightly fictionalized account of a visit to the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and the fire that tragically broke out on the fairgrounds. Discussed more recently in "The Devil in the White City." Text is unmarked, yellowed with some foxing. Front hinge cracked but holding. Washington, D.C.: Cornelius Wendell, 1859 62 pp plus 27 B&W plates. Printed to accompany the United States and Mexican Boundary Survey(1848-1855) which determined the border between the United States and Mexico as defined in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which had ended the Mexican-American War. The results of the survey were published in the three volumes entitled Report on the United States and Mexican boundary survey, made under the direction of the secretary of the Interior by William H. Emory (1857-1859). This book has the title page of the survey followed by'contents of the volume' with parts 1 & II, botany and zoology of the survey. This book is solely the zoology. Text is tight and unmarked, with some foxing. Plates 23-27 have about three -quarters of an inch of moisture stain along top edge of pages. Endpapers have previous owner's name in ink. Publisher's red cloth boards are rubbed with small loss of material at extremities.. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall.

Virginia: The Nottoway County Historical Association, 1975 124 pp with BV&W illustrations in text. The material for this book, published by the Nottoway County Historical Association, was taken from three books published by Captain Irby and now out-of-print: "The Nottoway Greys," "The History of Randolf-Macon College and "Bird-Notes and Other Sketches." plus a collection of letters written to Virginia Jordan's grandmother by Captain Irby. The Captain was a commissioned officer in the Confederate Army, he saw action and was wounded at the Battle of Second Manassa. After the war and a career in business Irby became Randolf Macon College's Secretary and Treasurer from 1886 until 1902, resigning only shortly before his death. He also served as a trustee of the college for 50 years. He was the author of the first history of Randolf-Macon, in the late 1890s and the college has him to thank for collecting and preserving many of its old records. Text is clean, tight and unmarked. Pamphlet. 8 pp. Only known surviving copy of first issue of William Carpenter's Flat Earth movement newsletterpublished in 1887 William Carpenter, (1830 - 1896) a printer originally from Greenwich, England, was America's leading proponant of the Flat Earth theory. Hepublished "Theoretical Astronomy Examined and Exposed - Proving the Earth not a Globe" in 1864 under the name Common Sense. He later emigrated to Baltimore where he published "A Hundred Proofs the Earth is not a Globe" in 1885. Carpenter was a desciple of the English writer, Samuel Rowbotham,(1816-1885), who produced a pamphlet, with Carpenter's assistance, called Zetetic Astronomy in 1849 arguing again for a Flat Earth. He also published "Carpenter's Folly" of which only a few, possibly just two, issues were printed in 1887. Pages age-discolored, edges lightly chipped. $850.00 . 1st Edition. Pamphlet. 6" x 9".
