Beyond the Caspian A Naturalist in Central Asia, Carruthers, Douglas
20 Carruthers, Douglas Beyond the Caspian A Naturalist in Central Asia
Edinburgh, Scotland Oliver and Boyd 1949 First Edition Hardcover Very Good No Jacket Beddington, Roy Signed
Edinburgh, Scotland: Oliver and Boyd, 1949 xx, 289 pp with16 B&W photographs by the author and 6 colour illustrations by Roy Beddington.. Large coloured fold-out map of Central Asia at end of text. Of this book Carruthers states,"I was lucky. My new home stretched from the Caspian to Mongolia, from Siberia to India. My playground was the Gobi Desert and the Hungry Steppe; my garden the flower-strewn Heavenly Mountains and the rose-encumbered gorges of Bukhara. My park comprised the Hindu Kush, the Pamirs and the Altai. My chase held the giant wild ram, the heraldic beast of central Asia - primeval patriarch, perhaps of all the flocks on earth, besides the world's biggest ibex, stags, and roe-deer there were tigers and wild asses. The river valleys swarmed with pheasants and the open plains with partridges; myriads of wildfowl crowded the lakes in winter. For three years I had the run of it all, but three years were not enough. For his mapping and specimen collecting Carruthers was awarded the Patron's gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society. Signed with a dedication by the author to Sir Norman Boyd Kinnear. This is a dedication from one great naturalist to another. Kennear, (11 August 1882 -11 August 1957) a Scottish zoologist and ornithologist was Curator of the museum of the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), a position he held from November 1, 1907 to November 1919, as well as being assistant editor of the Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society.. He helped the BNHS organize its survey of Indian mammals which were begun around 1911. When the First World War broke out he attempted to join the Indian army but only served briefly in the Bombay volunteer rifles and as an intelligence officer in the defense of Bombay port between 1915 and 1919. During this time he also prepared a booklet on the animals of Mesopotamia. In 1920 he returned to Britain and became an assistant in the Department of Zoology at the Natural History Museum, becoming Keeper of Zoology in 1945. In 1947 the trustees of the Museum took the decision to appoint him as Director of the Museum. He was appointed a Commander of the British Empire in 1948 and was knighted in June of 1950. He was also a fellow of the Linnean Society of London He had a great interest in the writings of the naturalists on the voyages of James Cook. He was one of the founders of the Society for the History of Natural History. He wrote two papers in the Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society on the history of Indian ornithology and mammalogy. He edited editions of the Popular Handbook of Indian Birds In addition to the dedication there are two glowing newspaper obituaries for Douglas Carruthers pasted on the front endpapers. The outline of these clippings has caused some tanning on the opposing pages otherwise the text is clean, tight, unmarked and the map is clean and undamaged. The red cloth boards with gold blind-stamped titles on the cover and spine are in "about fine" condition with a little bumping to the cormers and spine ends with no loss of material or colour, boards are slightly bowed.. Dedication By Author. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Beddington, Roy. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.
