Japan, 1905 (Tokyo c. 1905). Oblong 4to. (17 text pages)+ 13 colour reproductions of battle scenes.Vivid reportage on one of the first naval battles in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05. Title page in English and Japanese, followed by 1 page in Japanese, 3 pages in English, 13 leaves with color lithographed illustrations on rectos, with descriptions in English and Japanese, then 12 pages in Japanese. The pages progress from right to left. (oblong 4to) 24x33 cm (9x13"), thin boards with pictorial in gilt, title in black in English and Japanese. Rare pictorial work presenting to the world the Battle of Chemulpo Bay, which took place on February 9, 1904 off Incheon, Korea. a decisive victory for the Japanese. The captivating illustrations are diagrammatic and progressive, virtually minute-by-minute, with keys to the ships and trajectory of the artillary shells, providing a view of the action as it unfolded. OCLC/WorldCat lists only two copies, both at Yale University, one giving the date as 1904, the other as 1905. This present copy has an inscription on the title-page dated July 1905, describing the location as off Inchon, Korea. The printed preface is signed by Jikemura Sakuhoku who lists Inouye Yoshio, who watched the battle from the shore, as the artist.. 1st Edition. Stiff Paper. Illus. by Inouye Yoshio. 13" x 9.5".
