Captain Richard Irby (1825 -1902) The Captain Remembers: The Papers of Captain Richard Irby Virginia The Nottoway County Historical Association 1975 Paperback Near Fine Signed Virginia: The Nottoway County Historical Association, 1975 124 pp with BV&W illustrations in text. The material for this book, published by the Nottoway County Historical Association, was taken from three books published by Captain Irby and now out-of-print: "The Nottoway Greys," "The History of Randolf-Macon College and "Bird-Notes and Other Sketches." plus a collection of letters written to Virginia Jordan's grandmother by Captain Irby. The Captain was a commissioned officer in the Confederate Army, he saw action and was wounded at the Battle of Second Manassa. After the war and a career in business Irby became Randolf Macon College's Secretary and Treasurer from 1886 until 1902, resigning only shortly before his death. He also served as a trustee of the college for 50 years. He was the author of the first history of Randolf-Macon, in the late 1890s and the college has him to thank for collecting and preserving many of its old records. Text is clean, tight and unmarked.
