Boards on both volumes are clean and undamaged save for slight bumping at spine ends and corners. Archibald Ross Colquhoun (1848 -1914) joined the Indian Public Works Department in 1871 as an assistant surveyor. In 1879 he was secretary and second in command of a government mission to Siam and the Shan States, and in 1881-2 he travelled from Canton (Guangzhou) to Bhamo in Chinese dress to find the best railway route between China and Burma, a journey he wrote on in his two books, "Across Chryse," and "Amongst the Shan." Widely regarded as an explorer of the first rank, in 1884 he was awarded the Royal Geographical Society founders' gold medal; his publications on the trade potential of Burma were welcomed by the British international business interests. In 1885 he became deputy commissioner in Upper Burma however his career came to an abrupt end when a frank criticism he made of government policy fell accidentally into the hands of his superiors. In 1894 Colquhoun became the agent in Peking (Beijing) for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank and in the following year he surveyed Nicaragua and Panama as possible routes for a Central American canal. From 1896 until 1913 he undertook several tours of Siberia, China, Japan, the Philippines, the Dutch East Indies, southern Africa, North and South America, and the Habsburg Empire. Powerfully built, with a walrus moustache and a fondness for champagne, Colquhoun was a mercurial character whose life embodied the Victorian ideal of colonial adventure. He was an accomplished writer of more than fourteen scholarly books and numerous articles on colonial administration, comparative ethnography, railway and canal construction, land settlement, trade prospects, and geopolitics and defense in the European colonial empires, Russia, China, East Asia, and the Americas. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 15 Baber, Edward Colborne Travels and Researches in Western China. Royal Geographical Society, Supplementary Papers, Vol. I, Part 1
London John Murray 1882 First Edition Hardcover
London: John Murray, 1882 viii, 201 pp., very large folding map, folding plates; original printed boards, book plate to the front paste down, covers worn, else very good. Edward Colborne Baber (1843 -1890) was an English orientalist and traveller. He was employed by the British Embassy in Beijing and during his tenure made three trips to the southern borderlands of China. Covered in this book is his third trip in 1878 during which he journeyed from Chungqing northward through a little known tract of mountain country occupied by the Sifan tribes, to the town of Tachienlu on the great Lhasa road, and wrote a valuable monograph on the 'Chinese Tea-trade with Thibet', Later Baber, having returned to England during 1883, skillfully condensed a narrative of his friend Captain William John Gill's 'Journey through China and Eastern Tibet to Burmah,' which was published in 1883 as 'The River of Golden Sand." The Royal Geographical Society's Supplementary Papers, of which this is the first published, are described as 'intended to contain those memoirs which are too long or elaborate for insertion in the monthly Proceedings.'. 16 Baddeley, Paul Frederick Hervy ): Whirlwinds and dust-storms of India : an investigation into the law of wind and revolving storms at sea : with an addendum containing practical hints on sanitary measures required for the European soldier in India (plates)
London Bell and Daldy 1860 1st Edition Hardcover Fair No Jacket
London: Bell and Daldy, 1860 16 B&W plates plus 3 diagrams, one folding. de-assessioned from the library of the American Museum of Natural History. Paul Frederick Hervy Baddeley, a surgeon in the Bengal Army published several studies on the nature and physics of whirlwinds and invented a cyclone compass for use at sea. Baddeley proposed that storms, whirlwinds and waterspouts, and all kindred phenomena, were caused by an electric meteor in the form of cylindrical columns, working together in a spiral manner, and possessing rotatory and progressive motions per se ipsos; emendating from the higher regions and traversing the earth's surface. He believed that his 'electrical meteors' are not merely discharges of electricity, but 'a permanent indestructible form of imponderable matter, hitherto undescribed, occupying the higher regions of the sky and liable... to be diverted downward to the earth.' 'Whirlwinds and Dust Storms of India' was published in two volumes, text and plates. I am including a modern reprint of the text and so far I've been unable to locate an original copy. Text of this volume is 'fair,' considerable foxing and some short closed tears along lower edge of pages. Several pages are detached but all are present. Folding diagram has split along folds. Endpapers are probably a relining. Brown cloth boards with gold-stamped titles and an embossed decorative frame on front board and cyclone compass illustrations on rear board are rubbed at extremities with some loss of material. Beyond scarce.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. 12" x 8.25". Ex-Library. First Edition.

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1900 Two volumes xiii, 406 pp and 365 pp with vii, 116 plates but lacking folding map. Volume l has a slight slant, and is missing final three pages.(but the missing pages have been printed out from an on-line text) I have copied the pages from an online version and included them with the book. Portrait of Isabella Bird frontis volume I. Isabella Bird Bishop was one of the most celebrated lady explorers of the late 19th century The books describe a lengthy trip through southern China to the tribal areas along eastern border of Tibet. A handsome set though possibly married. Texts for both are clean, tight and unmarked. Dark blue cloth boards with a design of a Chinese gate gold-stamped on cover, gilt top edge of pages. Both have some corner and spine end bumping. Volume ll has the bookplate and an inscription to Lawrence C.
