Dark red leather blind-stamped boards are 'good' with some rubbing to extremities with loss of material. Gold-stamped title on front board. Stephen Meredyth Edwardes (1873-1927) a graduate of Eton and Oxford, joined the Indian Civil Service after graduation in 1888 and was allotted to the Bombay district of Western India where he amplified and revised the Bombay census. In those years he published 'The Rise of Bombay,' 'Byways of Bombay,' and three volumes of the Bombay Gazetteer, making him a much-cited authority on the city. In 1910, he was appointed Commissioner of Police for Bombay, in charge of maintaining good order for the King and Queen's landing and short stay in the city on their way to the Delhi Coronation Durbar. His role as Commissioner, and "his uncanny knowledge of the frailties and lapses of men high and low", enabled him to publish in 1925 a highly-praised book on 'Crime in India.' Edwardes' true interests lay in research rather than politics, he was a past president and constant contributor to the 'Proceedings of the Bombay Anthropological Society,' also joint editor of the Indian Antiquary' and secretary of the Royal Asiatic Society. Junagadh was a princely state in Gujarat ruled by a Muslim Babi Dynasty in British India, until its integration into the Indian Union in 1948., was founded in 1730. In 1807 it became a British protectorate. The East India Company took control of the state by 1818, but the Saurashtra area never came under the direct administration of British India. Instead, the British divided the territory into more than one hundred princely states, which remained in existence until 1947. The present old town, developed during the 19th and 20th centuries, is one of the former princely states which were outside but under the suzerainty of British India. First Edition. Hardcover.
