1 Trench, Charles Chenevix The Road to Khartoum
Dorset Press 1987 0880291524 / 9780880291521 Hardcover Fine Fine Jacket
Dorset Press, 1987 320 pp with21 B&W illustrations and 3 maps. A reprint of the 1979 edition. This splendidly researched portrait of General Charles Gordan, who served as Victorian Britain's ideal of a military hero, who is presented as a many-faceted man. Trench confronts the central fact of Gordan's career and personality: the unaccountable fascination which he exercised over others, why men were willing to uproot there lives and endure appalling hardships, just to follow him: to China, to South Africa, to Khartoum where he met his death when the English garrison was overrun by Muslim fanatics in 1884. Text is clean, tight and unmarked. DJ is bright and undamaged. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine.
