New York Scribner & Welford 1883 First American Edition. Hardcover Very Good No Jacket
New York: Scribner & Welford, 1883 New York: Scribner & Welford, 1883 Across Chrysê, being the narrative of exploration through the South China border lands from Canton to Mandalay. With 3 specially prepared maps, 30 facsimiles of native drawings, and 300 illustrations. Chiefly from Original Photographs and Sketches Vol 1 - xxx+ 420 pp, Volume 2 - xvi + 408 pp, with 300 wood engraved illustrations. Texts are tight, unmarked save for foxing and the occasional fingerprint. Two folding maps, one post-text for each volume plus one map in text. The maps are foxed but undamaged. Grey cloth boards have gold-stamped titles and a drawing of a cliff and sampan in brown. Both spines have faint remnants of library numbers, these are the only library markings. Boards on both volumes are clean and undamaged save for slight bumping at spine ends and corners. Archibald Ross Colquhoun (1848 -1914) joined the Indian Public Works Department in 1871 as an assistant surveyor. In 1879 he was secretary and second in command of a government mission to Siam and the Shan States, and in 1881-2 he travelled from Canton (Guangzhou) to Bhamo in Chinese dress to find the best railway route between China and Burma, a journey he wrote on in his two books, "Across Chryse," and "Amongst the Shan." Widely regarded as an explorer of the first rank, in 1884 he was awarded the Royal Geographical Society founders' gold medal; his publications on the trade potential of Burma were welcomed by the British international business interests. In 1885 he became deputy commissioner in Upper Burma however his career came to an abrupt end when a frank criticism he made of government policy fell accidentally into the hands of his superiors. In 1894 Colquhoun became the agent in Peking (Beijing) for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank and in the following year he surveyed Nicaragua and Panama as possible routes for a Central American canal. From 1896 until 1913 he undertook several tours of Siberia, China, Japan, the Philippines, the Dutch East Indies, southern Africa, North and South America, and the Habsburg Empire. Powerfully built, with a walrus moustache and a fondness for champagne, Colquhoun was a mercurial character whose life embodied the Victorian ideal of colonial adventure. He was an accomplished writer of more than fourteen scholarly books and numerous articles on colonial administration, comparative ethnography, railway and canal construction, land settlement, trade prospects, and geopolitics and defense in the European colonial empires, Russia, China, East Asia, and the Americas. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 12 Baddeley, Paul Frederick Hervy ): Whirlwinds and dust-storms of India : an investigation into the law of wind and revolving storms at sea : with an addendum containing practical hints on sanitary measures required for the European soldier in India (plates)
London Bell and Daldy 1860 1st Edition. Hardcover Fair No Jacket
London: Bell and Daldy, 1860 London: Bell and Daldy, 1860 16 B&W plates plus 3 diagrams, one folding. de-assessioned from the library of the American Museum of Natural History. Paul Frederick Hervy Baddeley, a surgeon in the Bengal Army published several studies on the nature and physics of whirlwinds and invented a cyclone compass for use at sea. Baddeley proposed that storms, whirlwinds and waterspouts, and all kindred phenomena, were caused by an electric meteor in the form of cylindrical columns, working together in a spiral manner, and possessing rotatory and progressive motions per se ipsos; emendating from the higher regions and traversing the earth's surface. He believed that his 'electrical meteors' are not merely discharges of electricity, but 'a permanent indestructible form of imponderable matter, hitherto undescribed, occupying the higher regions of the sky and liable. to be diverted downward to the earth.' 'Whirlwinds and Dust Storms of India' was published in two volumes, text and plates. I am including a modern reprint of the text and so far I've been unable to locate an original copy. Text of this volume is 'fair,' considerable foxing and some short closed tears along lower edge of pages. Several pages are detached but all are present. Folding diagram has split along folds. Endpapers are probably a relining. Brown cloth boards with gold-stamped titles and an embossed decorative frame on front board and cyclone compass illustrations on rear board are rubbed at extremities with some loss of material. Beyond scarce. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. 12" x 8.25". Ex-Library.. 1st Edition.. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. First Edition.

Beyond the Caspian A Naturalist in Central Asia, Carruthers, Douglas
18 Carruthers, Douglas Beyond the Caspian A Naturalist in Central Asia
Edinburgh, Scotland Oliver and Boyd 1949 First Edition. Hardcover Very Good No Jacket Beddington, Roy Signed
Edinburgh, Scotland: Oliver and Boyd, 1949 Edinburgh, Scotland: Oliver and Boyd, 1949 xx, 289 pp with16 B&W photographs by the author and 6 colour illustrations by Roy Beddington. Large coloured fold-out map of Central Asia at end of text. Of this book Carruthers states,"I was lucky. My new home stretched from the Caspian to Mongolia, from Siberia to India. My playground was the Gobi Desert and the Hungry Steppe; my garden the flower-strewn Heavenly Mountains and the rose-encumbered gorges of Bukhara. My park comprised the Hindu Kush, the Pamirs and the Altai. My chase held the giant wild ram, the heraldic beast of central Asia - primeval patriarch, perhaps of all the flocks on earth, besides the world's biggest ibex, stags, and roe-deer there were tigers and wild asses. The river valleys swarmed with pheasants and the open plains with partridges; myriads of wildfowl crowded the lakes in winter. For three years I had the run of it all, but three years were not enough. For his mapping and specimen collecting Carruthers was awarded the Patron's gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society. Signed with a dedication by the author to Sir Norman Boyd Kinnear. This is a dedication from one great naturalist to another. Kennear, (11 August 1882 -11 August 1957) a Scottish zoologist and ornithologist was Curator of the museum of the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), a position he held from November 1, 1907 to November 1919, as well as being assistant editor of the Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society. He helped the BNHS organize its survey of Indian mammals which were begun around 1911. When the First World War broke out he attempted to join the Indian army but only served briefly in the Bombay volunteer rifles and as an intelligence officer in the defense of Bombay port between 1915 and 1919. During this time he also prepared a booklet on the animals of Mesopotamia. In 1920 he returned to Britain and became an assistant in the Department of Zoology at the Natural History Museum, becoming Keeper of Zoology in 1945. In 1947 the trustees of the Museum took the decision to appoint him as Director of the Museum. He was appointed a Commander of the British Empire in 1948 and was knighted in June of 1950. He was also a fellow of the Linnean Society of London He had a great interest in the writings of the naturalists on the voyages of James Cook. He was one of the founders of the Society for the History of Natural History. He wrote two papers in the Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society on the history of Indian ornithology and mammalogy. He edited editions of the Popular Handbook of Indian Birds In addition to the dedication there are two glowing newspaper obituaries for Douglas Carruthers pasted on the front endpapers. The outline of these clippings has caused some tanning on the opposing pages otherwise the text is clean, tight, unmarked and the map is clean and undamaged. The red cloth boards with gold blind-stamped titles on the cover and spine are in "about fine" condition with a little bumping to the cormers and spine ends with no loss of material or colour, boards are slightly bowed.
